Addressing Maternal Mortality in the U.S.

A study published in the Lancet medical journal reports that the maternal mortality ratio (per 100,000 livebirths) has increased from 16.9 in 1990 to 26.4 in 2015, as seen in chart(right). This upward trend in the U.S. is opposite of the international trend.

Currently, the U.S. ranks 47th out of 183 countries in maternal mortality.

There is a need to focus efforts to prevent maternal deaths and improve maternity care for the 4 million U.S. women giving birth each year.

MATERNAL MORTALITY:
HOW ARE WE HELPING TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE?

Using a combination of analytics, assessment and personalized learning, Relias helps hospitals truly understand variation in knowledge and care delivery across their nurses and doctors. Empowered with this knowledge and our learning platform, providers and hospitals can begin to change the narrative and reduce avoidable maternal mortality.

Explore how our partnership with AWHONN combined with our obstetrics solution, Relias OB, formerly GNOSIS, improves perinatal safety.

Blended Learning Model

AWHONN and Relias are also building a blended approach to obstetrical education for nurses and providers focused on highest-risk areas of clinical practice. Based on targeted assessment data, this comprehensive model combines the unique adult learning methodology of Relias OB with the quality instruction developed by AWHONN.

AWHONN Validated Content

We offer an entire suite of personalized learning courses that help obstetrical providers and nurses understand where they have gaps in knowledge and critical thinking. Core topics that are known contributors of maternal mortality, such as delayed treatment of high blood pressure and underestimation of blood loss, are directly evaluated and addressed in our analytics and educational platform.

AWHONN content experts have reviewed and validated the five modules in Relias OB including:

  • Fetal Assessment and Monitoring
  • Shoulder Dystocia
  • Obstetrical Hemorrhage
  • Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy
  • Promoting Vaginal Birth.

Mothers & Babies First Research Project

The Mothers and Babies First Project is the first of its kind research initiative exploring the efficacy of a blended learning model that incorporates online assessment-driven learning with instructor-led education. With a focus on the highest-risk areas of obstetrics, we will examine the protocols and procedures of health systems using the AWHONN/Relias OB blended education model for improvements. Our mission is to identify and develop a prescriptive model of standardized implementation that is proven to yield results.

Already, we have demonstrated, in organizations using this approach, measurable improvements in maternal and newborn outcomes and claims reduction. The Project is supported by a multidisciplinary team of leading obstetric providers and nurses as well as high reliability and improvement experts during the project. The Advisory Council, which will facilitate and lead the project, is comprised of obstetric leaders of delivery systems known for being quality and safety leaders and who represent over 400,000 births annually. Each of these organizations are experiencing the value in this approach towards improvement and are progressive in leading effective change utilizing the blended model of education.

Relias helps you keep up with regulatory requirements and build a stronger workforce.
